A report by the the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) stated that broadband provision in the UK is more expensive in all but one of the 20 most developed countries in the world. Not only do we pay more, we also get slower top speeds due to old copper-wire telecommunication systems used in our exchanges. So we pay more for less – but by how much? (more…)

Tiscali broadband have bought the broadband and voice division of fellow ISP Pipex in a deal reputed to be worth £210m. The purchase (subject to approval from the Office of Fair Trading) will see Tiscali’s share of the UK broadband market rise to around 15% making them the third biggest ISP behind “the big two” of Virgin Media and BT Total Broadband.

Pipex currently have around one million customers, with around 250,000 signed up for one of their broadband and phone bundles, 570,000 using standalone broadband and 650,000 using their phone services. (more…)

TalkTalk have built on last years publicity seeking FREE broadband offer by offering a new all-inclusive broadband and calls package that costs £5.89 a month, excluding line rental. Talk2 International combines up to 8MB broadband with unlimited UK local and national evening and weekend calls and FREE international landline calls to 36 countries. The total price of the package is £16.39 per month including the £10.50 line rental which is the same price that you would pay BT.

This is an excellent package for people who make regular calls abroad as they are getting FREE BRoadband as well. Users must sign up to an 18 month contract and there is also a £29.99 one off connection fee.

The much publicised dispute between Sky and Virgin Media went a stage further when Sky submitted papers to the High Court stating that Virgin Media refused to negotiate on price for access to their channels.

Unless you’ve been living on Mars for the last month or so you will have seen full page ads taken in daily newspapers together with tit for tat stories as the communications giants Sky and Virgin Media battle for the public’s affection, and more importantly pounds! (more…)

Speculation is rife that o2 mobile phones have beaten off stiff competition from rivals Vodafone to secure rights to sell the eagerly anticipated Apple iPhone. Initial reports suggest that o2 will have the iPhone on the shelves in time for Christmas with the 4GB and 8GB Apple iPhone’s looking to retail at £300 – £399.

This is currently purely speculation but there’s no smoke without fire and several tabloids and news services have reported that a deal has been struck so things are looking good for o2  as they have secured the must have Christmas gift for 2007. I know I’ll be asking Santa nicely for one!!! (more…)
