Virgin Media have unveiled their latest weapon in the battle for service provider supremacy – the 50Meg broadband!

Virgin Media’s new network will have more than double the capacity of the original cable network and will reach up to 12million homes. The new bandwidth will now allow users to download an entire album of music in just 11 seconds, a TV show in one minute, and a an entire movie in just three minutes!

Virgin Media’s chief executive, Neil Berkett, said -

‘As the first ISP to roll out next-generation broadband access, our 50Mb service represents the dawning of a new era of high-speed services in the UK and is just the beginning of what we hope to offer our customers over the coming years. This service will transform the way people interact and entertain themselves online and will provide a broadband experience that is truly world class.’

Deployment of the new network has already begun in Scotland, the Midlands and South London, with another 40% of the Virgin network receiving the new fibre optic network by the end of the year. It will be the first ISP to offer such speeds to its customers, with the next fastest offering coming from Be Broadband at 24Mbps.

This upgrade not only promises a faster connection for new Virgin Media clients but also existing customers as its 10Mb and 20Mb users will be moved onto a new network, freeing up capacity on the old one.

T Mobile - Mobile Broadband has launched a new device that lets mobile broadband users share their connection with others. The dock supports up to three users for no additional fee and behaves just like a fixed line wireless modem does, enabling simultaneous use of the same password-protected T-Mobile mobile broadband stick.

T-Mobile UK’s head of internet and entertainment, Richard Warmsley, said –

‘Mobile Broadband has experienced huge growth across the market, and as its popularity grows, we engage with our customers to continually improve and provide them with exactly the service they want. One of the key insights that came back from users was the desire to share the connection with friends and relatives. The Share Dock makes this a reality in a straight forward and simple way.’

The new mobile broadband share dock is available for free to those committing to an 18 month, £20 a month contract. The availability of T-Mobile’s dock follows the launch of a similar router by fellow mobile operator 3 Mobile Broadband, which costs just £15 a month including VAT.
