BT have announced that Birmingham will be the next location for their live trials of their 21st Century Network (21CN) following on from successful trials completed in June 2007 in Central London, Woolwich and Cambridge. 21CN will make new voice and data services possible by using ADSL2+ technology through the copper wire infrastructure that already exists in BT exchanges.

These technological advancements will lead to faster broadband speeds as well as improved Internet based services such as high definition television provision. Tiscali and BT are already providing Freeview TV through a broadband connection in certain areas throughout the UK and as 21CN is rolled out nationwide in  2008 this will open up new media possibilities for the general public.

BT is working closely with business ISP Entanet, BT’s Wholesale and Retail businesses on the next phase of testing which will start at a single live exchange in Birmingham from November, with 9 other exchanges to be added by January 2008.
