With broadband penetration becoming increasingly widespread, broadband providers are focusing more and more on the ’switchers’ rather than brand new customers. A common problem that we hear time and again is that of MAC codes and the issues that they cause in terms of being able to switch broadband provider quickly and efficiently online. We would estimate that broadband suppliers are losing thousands of sales through online switchers not realising that a MAC code is needed or having their MAC code available at the point of purchase. This disrupts the sales cycle and can therefore introduce an opportunity to reconsider which broadband provider a customer chooses. Customers are notoriously fickle with little brand loyalty, meaning the very fact that they have to obtain a MAC code before proceeding can have a negative effect on their perception of the provider that they initially opted for.

We recently heard a rumour that Eclipse Internet, who already have a very good reputation, are about to launch a service whereby a customer can sign up to their broadband products online and then provide their MAC code at a later date. Eclipse have a call centre team in place who would call the customer to obtain the MAC code at an agreed point following the online sale. If Eclipse manage to launch this service and it all goes smoothly this could give Eclipse Broadband a real competitive edge over their rivals as well as boosting their online conversion rate considerably.

As a relatively small provider they are more likely to be able to manage this process but we would still advise Eclipse to exercise a degree of caution given the obvious room for error. However, top marks for innovation and if they can pull it off it will be a real coup for Eclipse in terms of their reputation for being a customer centric broadband provider who aim to make life easier for their customers.  Eclipse Internet offer 8MB Unlimited Broadband from just £14.99 a month and have 4 different packages which differenciate on price depending on the priority for bandwidth you want during busy times. This innovative approach helped to win them the Best Consumer ISP at the 2007 ISPA’s (Internet Serivice Provider Awards) and means all Eclipse Broadband users get up to 8Meg unlimited broadband during more quiet periods but those who need priority access to high speeds pay extra to receive it with the top price being £29.99 per month.
