World Broadband Speeds

A new report released this week suggests that the United Kingdom has begun to lag when it comes to broadband speeds. The report titled “state of the internet” and authored by consultancy Akami suggests that during the first quarter of this year, the UK held the 27th spot in a ranking 0f 201 countries, and that broadband users had an average speed of 2.8 Mbps. This is down from 23rd place in the report from the fourth quarter of 2009.

South Korea was the top ranking country, clocking an average speed of 12Mbps, which was then followed by Hong Kong with 9 Mbps and then Japan with an average speed of 7.8 Mbps. Britain also failed to make it into the top 100 cities list with the fastest broadband. Japan dominated that particular ranking with 53 cities in the list, followed by South Korea with 11.

In fact only eight European cities across five countries made the list, four of which are in Romania. Britain and Germany were the only two nations surveyed in the report which failed to show accelerated growth in internet penetration during the quarter.

A recent OFCOM report found that Virgin Media Cable Broadband currently has the top available speeds in the UK – their “up to” 50Mb cable service delivered on average download speeds of around 36Mbit/s with single thread tests and around 46Mb with multi-thread tests conducted between 4 and 6am.
