Virgin Media broadband, provider of the UK’s fastest service, has started to test the real possibility of a 200Mb connection speed! With it’s ultrafast cable network, Virgin Media will be testing speeds four times faster than their current 50Mb service. With Japan offering 160Mb and the US 101Mb, this groundbreaking service would be the fastest in the world.

After successful lab trials the 200Mb pilot service started last week in Ashford, Kent, and will build to 100 other sites to help shape the most advanced broadband service in the world. Virgin Media will be testing many new state of the art applications and entertainment services in full High Definition and 3D. This will mirror the work being created to deliver applications and support such as video conferencing and home surveillance. Alongside all these features, Virgin Media will also be ensuring that the UK stays as the frontrunner in the global digital revolution.

Chief executive officer at Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, said -

We’re really excited to be embarking on this journey of discovery. With the only true next generation network in the UK, we’re at the forefront of innovation and understanding when it comes to ultrafast broadband services and the 200Mb pilot will give us further insight into how true ‘wideband’ services might be used by consumers.

Virgin Media will be running the pilot project for 6 months to fully understand customer usage, whilst also working with a range of suppliers to help ensure advancements in broadband technology are able to be fully maximised.
