Broadband Prices Falling in the UK
Good news for internet users as the cost of the cheapest broadband package has fallen to below £6 a month. With so many broadband providers keen to attract new customers, prices have plummeted across the board in a battle to offer the best credit crunching bargains.
Plusnet, part of British Telecom, has launched a new broadband service for only £5.99 a month. Plusnet Value customers will receive speeds of up to 8Mb and a monthly usage allowance of up to 10Gb. There’s also no connection charge and a free wireless router, making this the cheapest broadband package available in the UK. Other companies such as Sky Broadband, Virgin Media National (ADSL) and O2 Broadband are also offering competitive packages to new subscribers, with the O2 offer looking particularly attractive.
02 broadband is currently available from as little as £7.50 a month, and rate highly in customer satisfaction surveys for their UK based call centres and connection speeds. All of these low price deals do command a long term contract commitment for up to 18 months, but for most people this is a small price to pay for a cheap, fast, internet service.

BT Announce Super Fast Broadband Plans
British Telecom broadband has today announced their plans to connect 10 million homes across the UK to their new fibre-optic network. By replacing the copper wiring that link most homes today, BT will have to spend £1.5bn to create the new super-fast network across the UK over the next four years, which when completed will connect 40% of the UK population.
But, alongside BT’s new network comes fears that they will monopolize the market, causing smaller rivals to lose out in the long term. Even though BT insist they want to bring faster internet services to the majority of the UK, it is also feared the new cabling will create a broadband divide between urban and rural areas.
In the more remote parts of the UK where the fibre optic cable will not reach, ADSL broadband will remain, though BT has said it will be improving the service to the 24Mbps ADSL2+. The quickest ADSL currently available is be broadband at 24Meg and O2 broadband at 20Meg. Virgin Media broadband currently runs on the fibre optic network but can only achieve speeds of 20Meg, though their 50Meg broadband should be available out across the UK within the next year.
BT will begin their cabling by laying fibre directly to new homes as they are built, whilst other sites will have fibre cable all the way to their home. BT new system should transform consumer’s internet experience, allowing high-definition video over the internet whilst also running other bandwidth-heavy services.
British Telecom’s chief executive, Ian Livingston, said -
‘This is the beginning of a new chapter in British telecommunications history. Broadband has boosted the UK economy and is now an essential part of our customers’ lives. We now want to make a step-change in broadband provision which will offer faster speeds than ever before’

Sewers to Offer up to 100Meg Broadband
New developments in internet cabling look to be getting started in September, with the UK’s sewers providing the gateway to the world wide web. The Merseyside based company H20 Network’s ethos ‘using the Past to Connect the Future’ came up with their system F.O.C.U.S (Fibre Optical Cable Underground Sewer) in 2003, and have been in discussion with councils in Northampton, Bournemouth and Dundee to see which one of the towns will be first to receive the 100mbs service. This is super fast when compared to current fastest broadband providers Be Broadband who offer 24 meg, and O2 broadband who offer 20 meg. This is particularly exciting news for Venturian Media as our Northampton service currently runs at around 4 meg, meaning will the new H20 service we would be running at 25 times our standard rate!
This environmentally friendly cabling service can be installed 80 per cent faster than traditional wiring methods. This will save the Government over £1billion a year in roadworks, plus another £4billion will be saved by cutting down traffic disruptions. Another thing that won’t be disrupted is customers connections, where 2km of cable would usually take 12 months to be laid under roads, H20 can provide the same system in 4 hours.
Managing director Elfed Thomas came up with the idea of using sewer ducts for fibre optic cables some years ago.
“We have big infrastructure problems in the UK yet we have all this piping, so I thought why can’t we use the sewers? The alternative way of laying fibre involves digging up the roads. This can be extremely disruptive, expensive and slow, with it costing between £150 and £200 per metre to dig up a road. There is also the added advantage of the new cable lying 5metres below the ground, compared with 450mm for conventional cables. The H20 system eliminates the additional connection fee telecom companies charge when adding extra bandwidth. With our cable having no restriction on bandwidth, the customer is firmly in control and has the ability to upgrade at any time without the additional cost.”
With over 360,000 miles of sewerage pipes in the UK alone, this system can cut costs nationwide. It also opens up the possibility of more fibre optic usage in the more remote parts of the country. Although people will be claiming we’ve been ‘laying cable’ in the sewers for centuries, this vast network of underground piping could not only help the people of Britain, but also the environment.
