Virgin Media broadband has announced plans to release a 100Mb service, 24 times quicker than average speeds. The service, planned to be up and running by the end of 2010, is the UK’s biggest jump in speed capability ever, and will open up a whole new dimension of internet usage.

The new 100Mb service means users will be able to download -

• music album in as little as 5 seconds
• hour long TV show in 31 seconds
• HD movie in 7 minutes 25 seconds

The new speed tier will provide Virgin Media customers with the fastest internet on the planet, perfect for tech-savvy users. A survey by Virgin Media has shown that a large proportion of the UK become stressed when they lose their internet connection or mobile phone reception. The report has revealed around 35% of the people surveyed become distressed without internet access, with another 27% claiming to get worried when they can’t contact friends online (what is wrong with some people!)

31% claim to get upset(?!) when not working online, and another 20% say that not being able to search for the best deals makes them hot under the collar. Another quarter of those surveyed freak out when they can’t access online maps, whilst another 21% said that online dating was a huge factor in their lives.

An ‘always on’ lifestyle may not be for everyone but the report highlights that there is a significant number of people for whom always being connected actually increases peace of mind.

People today are so wired for technology, maybe they should try a bit of a break from their social networking sites, take a look around and smell the roses.

Virgin Media national has launched a great new speed predictor for customers who don’t live in their super fast fibre optic catchment areas. They will be unveiling the new National Broadband Best Speed Promise which will guarantee to give customers honest information about their technical capabilities. The Best Speed Promise comes on the back of a recent Ofcom report showing that many consumers are being promised broadband speeds their many providers cannot support.

Virgin Media will now feature a maximum ‘up to’ speed claim, where they can demonstrate a customer’s connection is technically capable of receiving. This will then allow Virgin media the ability to guarantee customers the fastest broadband speeds their latest ADSL technology can provide.

Virgin Media supremo Richard Branson is absolutely over the moon with England’s thrilling 2nd Test victory against the Aussies at Lords, though it did cost him a quid or two!  Having drawn the First Test in Cardiff (which I actually managed to attend, praise the lord for the gift of corporate tickets!), England’s much deserved victory was their first at Lord’s against Australia for 75 years.
