Virgin Media Broadband Streets Ahead in Ofcom Testing
Virgin Media broadband came out on top of OFCOM’s 10MB and 20MB UK speed comparison tests, whose figures were published on Tuesday 27th July 2010. In both studies Virgin Media offered almost DOUBLE the average broadband speed of the nearest competitor between the peak hours of 8-10pm.
OFCOM research provides the UK’s most comprehensive internet speed survey, and shows that the countries residential broadband speeds have risen nationally by 25% over the past 12 months. The survey does however show that many providers advertised service are not exactly what is available for many customers. Cable broadband was shown to deliver much faster download speeds than other services available, with OFCOM’s findings including -
Virgin Media’s ‘up to’ 10Mbit/s and ‘up to’ 20Mbit/s cable services delivered average download speeds around twice as fast as DSL packages with the same or similar headline speed.
Virgin Media’s ‘up to’ 50Mbit/s cable service was the fastest service tested, delivering average download speeds of around 36Mbit/s with single thread tests and around 46Mbit/s with multi-thread tests conducted between 4 and 6am. A single thread test involves downloading a single file, while a multi-thread test involves conducting three file downloads simultaneously, which is more typical of the way heavy internet users consume broadband.

As you can see, Virgin Media delivers a great selection of top end speeds across all their packages. When it comes to choosing a broadband provider, OFCOM’s findings show that when you require power and speed, Virgin Media broadband truly is top of the pile.

National Fibre Optic Could Cost the Government £15 Billion
The ex-head of research at BT Total broadband, Peter Cochrane, claims that the UK will need funding of up to £15 billion to create their planned nationwide fibre optic broadband roll out to all homes and businesses. Futurologist Mr. Cochrane, who ran BT’s research department for 7 years, claims that the estimated expected cost of £5 billion could and maybe will cost three times that amount, depending on the type of technology used and its deployment.
With the current uncertainty of the national election that’s engulfing the country, all 3 major parties have very different national broadband plans that could come into action depending on who wins. One thing is certain though, that whoever does make it into Government will have to pledge a lot more from their budgets to increase the UK’s national fibre optic network to the size that has been promised.
The private industry sector is already getting involved with BT Total broadband investing £1.5 billion for the improvements, whilst Virgin Media broadband will continue their superfast broadband trials throughout the UK. If the figure does reach an astounding £15 billion, the UK could be left lagging behind the rest of the world in broadband capability unless the funding and correct infrastructure are put into place.
Peter Cochrane said -
In the mind of the Government, the UK is at the forefront of the broadband revolution. Unfortunately, we are not even in the top 10. Our ranking is actually somewhere between 20th and 30th. So the clock is ticking. The UK has to grasp the nettle, stop all debate, and get on with the job.

Virgin Media to Trial Ultrafast Broadband in Woolhampton, Berkshire
The Berkshire village of Woolhampton has been chosen by Virgin Media broadband to trial their pioneering new service which will be delivered using telephone poles. By connecting the village’s homes directly to their fibre optic network, Virgin Media will be increasing broadband speeds to the rural community ten times faster than the previously relied upon copper network. Alongside this ultrafast broadband, the villagers of Woolhampton will also be offered the Virgin Media cable TV service which includes 5,000 hours of catch up TV and on demand content alongside the usual popular channels.
The trial is scheduled to run for six months and is part of Virgin Media’s plan to bring next generation services to people who live beyond the reach of their fibre optic network. Virgin Media is also planning to extend it’s network to more than 1million more homes through the deployment of their award winning service via the new telegraph pole system.
Chief executive officer of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, said -
This unique trial will allow us to understand the possibilities of aerial deployment and may provide an exciting new way to extend next generation broadband services. With everything from BBC iPlayer to YouTube increasingly demanding reliable ultrafast broadband speeds, we’re keen to ensure that all communities, in towns, cities and villages right across the UK, stand to benefit.
With Virgin Media’s extensive network already reaching 12.6 million homes in the UK, this old school method of data transfer could be the perfect transport system to reach those parts that the fibre optic cable cannot. Thanks to years of telecommunications via telephone poles across the country, this is a fantastic way to ensure that more homes across the UK are given the opportunity to enjoy Virgin Media’s ultra fast service, and not just those who live in built up towns and cities. The trial will start this month and if successful could see up to one million extra homes benefiting from speeds of up to 100Mb.

Virgin Media to Launch 100Mb Broadband This Year
Virgin Media broadband has announced plans to release a 100Mb service, 24 times quicker than average speeds. The service, planned to be up and running by the end of 2010, is the UK’s biggest jump in speed capability ever, and will open up a whole new dimension of internet usage.
The new 100Mb service means users will be able to download -
- music album in as little as 5 seconds
- hour long TV show in 31 seconds
- HD movie in 7 minutes 25 seconds
The new speed tier will provide Virgin Media customers with the fastest internet on the planet, perfect for tech-savvy users. Virgin Media already lead the market in broadband services, and have already increased their top tier broadband from 20Mb to 100Mb in less than two years. That’s some fast work in more ways than one!
Thanks to it’s fibre optic cable network, Virgin Media has been providing next generation internet speeds to over 12 million homes throughout the UK. Plus with their cable networking, Virgin Media are one of the few companies who can actually deliver close to their advertised speeds.
Virgin Media’s chief executive officer, Neil Berkett, said -
There is nothing we can’t do with our fibre optic cable network, and the upcoming launch of our flagship 100Mb service will give our customers the ultimate broadband experience. Just as we led the way by launching the UK’s first ever next generation service, we want to keep giving our customers the very best broadband available, by investing in technological innovation and transforming the experience they have when they are online. The launch of Virgin Media’s 100Mb service will be a historic moment and will mean the UK will be comparable to other leading broadband nations.
Virgin Media will also be looking to recruit hundreds of customers to test their pilot 200Mb service in Coventry, which began work in Kent last year. The pilot system will be focusing on future technologies such as home teleconferencing and downloading HD programmes on-demand. All of these programmes will demand super high speeds, but it appears that Virgin Media have all this in hand!

Can a Lack of Internet Connection Cause Stess?
A survey by Virgin Media has shown that a large proportion of the UK become stressed when they lose their internet connection or mobile phone reception. The report has revealed around 35% of the people surveyed become distressed without internet access, with another 27% claiming to get worried when they can’t contact friends online (what is wrong with some people!)
31% claim to get upset(?!) when not working online, and another 20% say that not being able to search for the best deals makes them hot under the collar. Another quarter of those surveyed freak out when they can’t access online maps, whilst another 21% said that online dating was a huge factor in their lives.
Virgin Media’s chief operating officer, Mark Schweitzer, said -
An ‘always on’ lifestyle may not be for everyone but the report highlights that there is a significant number of people for whom always being connected actually increases peace of mind.
Call me old fashioned, but being in touch with people 24 hours a day can be quite intrusive, and sometimes I’d prefer a day of total peace and quiet. People today are so wired for technology, maybe they should try a bit of a break from their social networking sites, take a look around and smell the roses.
As an ex-text addict, it was quite a shock when I first went travelling to no longer be in constant touch with people 24/7. But after a while you begin to enjoy the added freedom that being uncontactable can sometimes bring. The day I become distressed without internet access is the day you can section me!
