02 Adds 3G Spectrum In London Increasing Capacity And Providing Faster Internet Speeds

March 24, 2011 · Filed Under Mobile Broadband, O2 · Comment

O2 Mobile Broadband has launched a new 3G network in London, which the company says will help improve both its network coverage and download speeds.

The telecoms giant is taking advantage of a recent decision by the regulator Ofcom which allows the company to reuse its existing 2G 900MHz spectrum for 3G services instead.

According to 02 the added spectrum in London will increase network capacity by as much as 50 per cent, offering users 30 per cent faster download speed, compared to when the spectrum was used to provide 2G services.

02 cited data provided by network specialists SIRODA, which suggests that between October 2010 and January 2011, O2 provided better data experiences in 12 out of 13 cities than other major operators.

Internet access to web pages on 02 was over three times fast than its slowest rival, rendering in just 1.4 seconds.

So-called 3G900 networks have already been deployed by O2 in various UK cities, including Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester.

“We’ve acted quickly to bring the benefits of 3G over 900MHz spectrum to our customers and we’re thrilled with the results,” said Nigel Purdy, chief technology officer (CTO) for Telefonica O2 UK.

Mr. Purdy added that the company intends to “intelligently layer” its network to ensure customers could access 2G, 3G, HSPA+, LTE and Wi-Fi connections.
