Broadband Poll - BT Looks To A Faster Network For Broadband

Take part in our poll on the right hand side to find out whether you believe we should pay more for faster broadband.

BT has changed is stance as to the viability of building a brand new super-fast fixed line broadband network which would cost an estimated ten billion pounds to build and implement. At a summit scheduled for November this year, BT will discuss the possibility of building and investing in this new network alongside the government and industry regulators in a similar move to the Australian marketplace where Telecoms giant Telstra are likely to green light new fibre optics to replace its existing network.

The announcement from BT comes following a statement last week from Stephen Timms, the minister for competitiveness, who has warned that Britian is in danger of falling behind other leading industralised countries such as France, US, Germany and Japan who are all investing in new fibre optic networks capable of delivering broadband speeds of up to 100 MB (megabits) per second. Currently the fastest available speed in the UK is 24MB from provider Be Broadband, although BT will also be offering a 24 Meg package from early next year. BT are likely to push the regulators to allow them to charge higher prices for other rivals to us the new network in order to cover some of the expense of changing from copper wires to fibre.

Ultimately this may lead to higher broadband costs for the consumer as broadband suppliers who BT wholesale to would need to pass the increased costs on to the consumer, unless they were prepared to operate with tighter margins. This may well lead to some of the smaller ISP’s going bust in what is already a crowded marketplace or more likely lead to further consolidation. Would you be prepared to pay extra for faster broadband?
