Virgin Media Cable Broadband Tops OFCOM Report
A recent report from industry watchdogs OFCOM found that there is an imbalance between broadband providers top advertised speeds versus what their customers actually see on a daily basis. The good news for Virgin Media's Fibre Optic Broadband customers is that on testing their 20Mb broadband package gave on average, speeds twice as fast when compared to leading competitors such as BT, Talk Talk and Sky.
- The research found that cable broadband services delivered significantly faster actual (or download) speeds than comparable DSL services:
- Virgin Media's "up to" 10Meg and 20Meg cable services delivered average download speeds around twice as fast as DSL packages with the same or similar headline speed
- Virgin Media's "up to" 50Mb cable service was the fastest service tested, delivering average download speeds of around 36Mbit/s with single thread tests and around 46Mb with multi-thread tests conducted between 4 and 6am.
So whats the difference between a single and mullet thread test? Here's the science bit - a single thread test involves downloading a single file, while a multi-thread test involves conducting three file downloads simultaneously, this is how most users experience the internet with music or movie streaming often going on simultaneously with checking emails or web browsing.
So there you have it - Virgin Media is currently the quickest broadband you can get in the UK - just as government watchdog OFCOM!
